PHYLUM VERTEBRATA

  • The animals with a true vertebral column and internal skeleton are called Vertebrate. They are bilaterally symmetrical, triploblastic and coelomic. Chordates have the following common features:
    • have a notochord
    • have a dorsal nerve chord
    • have paired gill pouches
  • Vertebrates are grouped into five class:
    1. PISCES
      • It includes fish and other aquatic animals
      • Their skin is covered with scales
      • Oxygen dissolved in water(H2O) is obtained by using gills.
      • Their body is streamlined and lay eggs for reproduction.
      • Heart is two chambered and are cold-blooded.
      • Eg : Dog fish, Rohu etc.
    2. AMPHIBIA
      • These animals don’t have scales but have a moist skin.
      • Three chambered heart is found in them
      • They possess gills as well as lungs for reproduction.
      • Eggs are laid in water however they are found in water as well as on land.
      • Eg : Toad, Salamander, Hyla etc.
    3. REPTILIA
      • They are cold-blooded and have three chambered heart.
      • Scales are present on their skin and breath through lungs.
      • Eggs of these creatures have a hard covering and do not need to be laid in water.
      • Eg : Snakes, Lizards, Turtles etc
    4. AVES
      • Aves are warm blooded creatures with a four chambered heart.
      • They lay eggs and have modified forelimbs for flight.
      • Lungs are there for them to respire.
      • Feathers act as a covering outside.
      • Eg : Ostrich, Pigeon, Sparrow etc.
    5. MAMMALIA
      • Mammals are warm blooded with four chambered heart.
      • They have mammary glands to feed their young ones.
      • Body is covered with skin consisting of hairs, sweat and oil glands.
      • They give live birth to their young ones.
      • Eg : Cat, Whale, Bat etc.
